Landmarks Foundation - A philanthropic organization based in New York City and committed to protecting sacred landmarks around the world. Landmarks' founder Sam Green's fundamental question is whether or not this sacred "pre-Columbian" site is a site worthy of Landmarks' support. During the Spring equinox, March 20, 2004, we recorded the alignment of the sun with the stone calendar chamber at Gungywamp. Under the foundation's definition for "sacred" places, this event provides evidence that Gungywamp is a "sacred" space, related to ancient Celtic culture and utilizes the earth's natural forces for ritual and seasonal activity. |
Bentley Systems, Inc. - A Philadelphia-area software company responsible for the well-known MicroStation CAD package. Bentley's charge to our studio was a difficult challenge. We had to integrate the MicroStation CAD and Geographics software into our design and analytical work. MicroStation graphics annotate our design drawings. Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection - This public agency aims to conserve, improve and protect the natural resources and environment of the State of Connecticut. DEP is in the process of acquiring the Gungywamp property as a part of its open space program. Our management strategy, detailed in the Design Project section of this DVD and further developed in a printed report (available for distribution), outlines a number of recommendations that both DEP and the current owners, the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) should consider before and after acquiring Gungywamp. Our primary recommendation suggests an alternate entity take ownership of the site. Additional site recommendations address specific needs of the Gungywamp Swamp land, the Town of Groton, and the State of Connecticut and include; funding strategies, adaptive management and public participation processes. As our research brought us in contact with many local people and interested parties, we detail those who want to be included in plans for the site as well as in the long-term preservation of the stones. The conceptual design of the Gungywamp Pavilion and Cyn challenge DEP, and others, to consider alternate uses that embrace Gungywamp's ambience, generate revenue, provide recreation, and protect the stone structures. |

Engel Brothers Media, Inc. - A New York City film company known for its highly-regarded television documentaries. Dr. Alexei Vranich, a contributor to the Gungywamp project, recently worked with Engel Brothers to produce a Discovery Channel special on the stone spheres found in Costa Rica. Dr. Vranich worked with a Penn Design studio to develop theories and content for the television special. Our research and documentation will be useful to Engel Brothers as they develop archeology documentaries for the cable television network Discovery Channel. While we conclude that the site is "sacred" we are unable to pinpoint who built the stone structures at Gungywamp. Hopefully, our work will encourage Engel Brothers and Dr. Vranich to continue unearthing the mystery around Gungywamp. |
