Gungywamp is an inter-disciplinary graduate design studio at the University of Pennsylvania in the School of Design. Gungywamp Swamp, located in Groton, Connecticut, is the site of primitive and mysterious stone structures. Many people speculate as to whether these stone structures are evidence of Celtic explorers. Our task was to investigate Gungywamp's past and use its dramatic setting to inspire a design and preservation strategy for the future. |

The group studio process invited individual students and small student teams to present ideas, writings, analytical thought, and design concepts for Gungywamp. Regular conversation and debate led to a singular project proposal based on the ideas of the group and the creative work of individuals. Often, concepts, drawings, and models, originally developed by one person, were passed like a baton in a relay race: carried by one until handed off to another team member for further exploration, refinement, or incorporation. Shared excitement and inspiration greatly influenced our site analysis and design. The process, always fluid, allowed for an individual's role to shift and ideas to grow. Additionally, many studio mates pushed themselves to learn new design programs and develop ideas within a collaborative environment. While this studio ends with the academic year, some participants hope to continue work on Gungywamp with our clients and interested community members. |
