The Stone Spheres of Costa Rica

Costa Rica has been home to many cultures through the ages-the Huetar, Brunka, and the Chorotega, to name a few. Among the pottery sherds, tumbled stone structures and other remnants of bygone peoples, there is perhaps no artifact so mysterious as the large stone spheres found primarily in the Diquís Valley region in the southwest of the country. Very little is known about the purpose of these spheres or even who made them or when. Although some have proposed that the spheres were symbols of power or boundary markers, most experts agree that, due to the careful groupings of documented spheres, they had some sort of astronomical relevance either as a calendar or as a navigational devise.

To truly appreciate these stone monuments, one must experience them in their original setting and in relation to each other. To learn the original purpose of the spheres, it is crucial to place them in their original alignments. The Park of the Spheres attempts to do both.
