About U.S. Census Race Data
Due to the politically and socially constructed nature of racial statistics, the 1990 and 2000 U.S. Census use slightly different definitions of race. In 2000, the U.S. Census Bureau recognized six races (White, African-American, Asian, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, Native American and Other) and two ethnicities (Hispanic Origin and Not of Hispanic Origin). In addition in 1990 and 2000, the Census Bureau allowed people to classify themselves as two or three races.

It is important to recognize that all racial and ethnic statistics are self-declared by each household. For more information on the way the U.S. Census 2000 defines race and ethnicity, visit: http://www.census.gov/prod/2001pubs/c2kbr01-1.pdf
