Welcome to Redlining in Philadelphia Online!

About the site

This website is based on the dissertation and on-going postdoctoral research about redlining in Philadelphia by Amy Hillier, PhD. Redlining is the term used to describe a mortgage lender's refusal to make loans to certain areas of a city, or make loans on less favorable terms, based on the racial composition of those areas. Whether you are a scholar or you are brand new to research about housing discrimination, this site will provide opportunities to learn more.

From this site, you can:
• Read about the Home Owners' Loan Corporation (HOLC)
• Look up HOLC's Philadelphia neighborhood appraisal sheets (1936-37)
• Explore a detailed map of Philadelphia from 1934
• Learn about research methods that test for historical redlining
• Identify references to other sources about redlining
• Find out more about this research project
