Proposals: Protecting

Why worth protecting?

The cultural landscape of Tierra Sajama suffers from numerous impending environmental, economic, and social threats:

  • Natural erosion is currently diminishing the visual clarity of the lines and will likely intensify;
  • Extreme climatic conditions are jeopardizing the structural stability of cultural features (chullpas, iglesias, etc.);
  • Threat of natural disasters, such as a volcanic eruption, is eminent and poses a complete altering of the landscape;
  • Unsupervised economic development, including unregulated tourism, could alter the comprehensive integrity of the Sajama line network; and
  • Non-participatory decision-making processes in land management could impair the vital relationship between local residents and their environment.

Such threats are the basis for the initial exploration of cultural resource management conducted by the Tierra Sajama planning team. Following the study, preliminary proposals of protection are suggested.
